Why Your IPTV Programme Guide Is Missing or Wrong

A blank or incorrect EPG is almost always one of three things: the guide URL is missing from your app, the time offset is set for the wrong region, or the guide data has not finished downloading. All three are fixable in a couple of minutes, and none of them mean your subscription is faulty.

The EPG — electronic programme guide — is a separate data file from your channel list. That distinction is the key to troubleshooting it: your channels can work perfectly while the guide stays empty, because they come from different sources.

Fix 1: Check the EPG URL Is Actually Set

Many IPTV apps do not import the guide automatically. If you only entered an M3U link, you may have no EPG source configured at all.

  1. Open your app's playlist or profile settings.
  2. Look for a field named EPG URL, XMLTV URL, or Guide source.
  3. If it is empty, paste the EPG link your provider supplied. It usually ends in .xml or .xml.gz.
  4. Save and force a guide refresh.

If you signed in with Xtream Codes rather than an M3U link, the guide normally loads automatically — in that case skip to the next fix.

Fix 2: Correct the Time Offset

If programmes appear but at the wrong times, the guide is loading correctly and only the offset is wrong. This is the single most common EPG complaint from UK viewers.

  • Find Time shift or EPG offset in your app settings.
  • Set it to 0 if your device clock is already on UK time.
  • Remember that the UK moves between GMT and BST, so a guide that was correct in winter can be an hour out in summer.
  • Check the device's own clock is set to automatic and to the correct region.

Fix 3: Force a Guide Refresh

EPG data is cached, and a partial or stale download shows as gaps. Most apps only refresh the guide once or twice a day.

  1. Find the manual refresh option, often listed as Update EPG or Reload guide.
  2. Wait for it to complete — a full guide can be several megabytes and takes a minute or two.
  3. If it fails partway, clear the app cache and try again on a wired connection.

Fix 4: Reduce How Many Days the Guide Loads

Low-powered devices, including the standard Firestick, sometimes cannot hold a full seven-day guide across thousands of channels in memory. The symptom is a guide that loads then disappears.

  • Reduce the guide window to two or three days in the app settings.
  • Hide channel groups you never watch, which shrinks the data the app has to process.
  • Consider a device with more memory if this recurs — see The Best IPTV Setup for a 4K Home Cinema Experience.

Fix 5: Rule Out a Provider-Side Problem

If the guide is empty across every app and device you own, the problem is not your setup. EPG servers go down independently of streaming servers, which is why your channels can keep working while the guide stays blank.

Contact your provider and ask whether their EPG source is available. A supplier who cannot answer that question is worth reconsidering — see How to Choose a Reliable IPTV Supplier in the UK.

When Only Some Channels Have Guide Data

Partial coverage is normal rather than broken. Guide data is matched to channels by an identifier, and channels the provider has not mapped simply show nothing. Some apps let you correct this manually by editing a channel's EPG ID, but on a large list it is rarely worth the effort.

Common Questions

Q: Why is my IPTV guide completely blank?

Usually because no EPG URL is configured in the app, or the guide download failed. Check the playlist settings for an EPG or XMLTV field, add the link your provider supplied, then force a refresh. If it is blank on every device, the provider's guide server is down.

Q: Why does my IPTV guide show the wrong times?

The time offset is set incorrectly. Set the EPG offset to 0 if your device clock is already on UK time, and check the device is set to update its clock automatically. The UK's switch between GMT and BST throws guides out by an hour twice a year.

Q: How often does the IPTV guide update?

Most apps refresh once or twice every 24 hours, and many let you set the interval. Refreshing more often rarely helps, because the underlying data on the provider's server usually only changes daily.

Q: Can I use a different EPG source than my provider's?

Yes, most apps accept any XMLTV URL. The catch is that channel identifiers have to match your playlist, so a third-party guide often maps to only some of your channels. It is worth trying if your provider's guide is unreliable.
