IPTV Bandwidth Calculator

Work out whether your broadband can actually carry IPTV. Enter your speed, how many screens will be watching at once, and the quality you want.

Use a real speed test taken in the evening, not the figure on your contract.

Your connection can handle this

You have 34 Mbps spare beyond what the streams need, which is enough margin for other devices and for the dips that cause buffering.

How these numbers are worked out

Each stream needs a sustained bitrate: roughly 3 Mbps for SD, 8 Mbps for HD, and 25 Mbps for 4K. The recommended figure adds 30% on top, because a line running at exactly its limit will stall the moment anything else uses it.

Sustained is the important word. Buffering is usually caused by a connection that cannot hold the bitrate continuously rather than one with a low peak speed — which is why a fast speed test does not rule out a connection problem. If your streams stutter only in the evening, the cause is congestion rather than capacity, and more bandwidth will not fix it.
