SHAN finds that if HAM FUNG marries FA KEI, CHI HEI's fate will be spoiled. He introduces FA KEI to HAM FUNG and the emperor is attracted. However FA KEI is not attracted by fortune and instead she regards freedom as more important. She begs SHAN to ask HAM RUNG not to marry her. SHAN pretends that his words are not accepted by HAM FUNG though he has tried his best. Having no other choices, FA KEI begs CHUNG to help her. CHUNG seeks help from CHI HEI, who is afraid that HAM FUNG will turn away from her. She persuades HAM FUNG to give up the marriage as the country is in crisis but HAM RUNG ignores her. As FA KEI knows CHUNG also loves her, she suggests to elope together. However SHAN tricks FA KEI, making her to stay while CHUNG leave.
