In the aftermath of World War II, Hong Kong sees the heavy influx of refugees: Between the 40's and 50's, there is a phenomenal growth with a great disparity between the rich and the poor. WEI-NAN lost his parents in childhood and lives in an environment of complexity. He brings up his younger brother WEI-CHI and sister MEI-FENG through personal efforts. But WEI-CHI, a loafer, wheels and deals for a living, much to the distress of his brother. Rich merchant TUNGKANG selects jewellery for his mistress YIN.HSUEH-YEN in a goldsmith, and is taken hostage when a robbery, occurs. While the thugs are entangled by the police, TUNG KANG jumps into WEI-NAN’s car and drives away from the hail of bullets on the spot. HSUEH-YEN, a beautiful and intelligent modern girl, has an illicit relationship with TUNO KANG, who is infatuated with her. His wife HSIU-CHU often quarrels with him over this, much to the annoyance of TUNG KANG……
